Cassandra Sanchez, who until last month served as New Hampshire’s child advocate, fears for the future of the independent office she led. But she’s proud of what she accomplished over the last four years — work that, from the beginning, centered on tragedies and a belief that systems can do better to prevent them. “I worked on the border of New Hampshire and Mass.,” she said. “And so having observed cross-border cases, how things could fall in between the gaps … I was like, ‘I want to be part of that. I want to be part of the solution. I want to be part of doing better by children.’”

“Children do not stop needing care when they enter kindergarten, and parents do not stop working when their child turns 5. The challenge simply changes. Instead of searching for infant care or full-day preschool, families begin piecing together before-school care, afterschool programs, school vacations, teacher workshop days, unexpected closures, snow days, and summer care.”
