Stefany Shaheen, a former Portsmouth city councilor and the daughter of U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, won the Democratic nomination for New Hampshire’s 1st Congressional District. In a close battle, Shaheen defeated fellow center-left candidate Maura Sullivan, a veteran and former Obama administration official. Progressive Carleigh Beroint, a union organizer and chair of the Hampton Select Board, placed third in the race.

Democratic U.S. Rep. Chris Pappas will face off in November against Republican former Sen. John E. Sununu to be U.S. senator, after the two candidates prevailed in their respective primaries Tuesday. The results, projected by the Associated Press shortly after 8 p.m., solidified what will likely be a bare-knuckled, expensive general election fight for the Senate seat, which is open after Sen. Jeanne Shaheen announced her retirement.

Portsmouth car dealer Anthony DiLorenzo won the GOP nomination for New Hampshire’s 1st Congressional District Tuesday. DiLorenzo will try to replace Rep. Chris Pappas, who gave up the seat to run for the Senate, and become the first Republican from New Hampshire elected to Congress in over a decade.
